Summer Nights 2011 - Exploring the Challenges and Benefits of a Tier 1 Research University Education - Tuesday, August 30th, 7:30pm at the Faculty Club - Featuring Professor Kathy Foltz, Life Sciences - Free Food!

“Summer Nights” is a fun and interactive event that bridges the gap between students and faculty through the exploration of a “hot topic” on the UCSB campus. We created events like “Summer Nights” and “Winter Nights” and “Spring Nights” based on focus group results in which students expressed the desire to interact with professors outside of the classroom.

  • Topics: see above. Our speakers are excited to showcase their opinions as discussion starters. The questions they will pose for our table discussions will be provocative.
    1. August 16th- Origins: A Conversation Between Religion and Science and Being a University Student
For the very first time we will be featuring not one, not two, but three professors; all from different departments discussing a single topic. Dr. Tommaso Treu from the Physics Department, Dr. Stefania Tutino from History and Dr. Richard Hecht from Religious Studies will be leading us in a discussion of how religion and science raise and answer fundamental questions surrounding the topic of origins and how that can effect the university student experience.
    2. August 30th- Exploring the Challenges and Benefits of a Tier 1 Research University Education
Dr. Kathy Foltz from the Life Sciences Department will be discussing a variety of topics related to pursuing an undergraduate degree at an institution such as UCSB since many undergraduates struggle with the large size and a (perceived or real) impersonal style of education at large research universities. We will be identifying challenges as well as advantages, and discussing ways to optimize the experience.
  • Location: The UCSB Faculty Club on both Tuesday nights
  • Dates/Times: Tuesday, August 16th @ 7:00pm and Tuesday, August 30th @ 7:00pm
  • Format: Table hosts arrive early, students will sign-in and be ushered to fill in around faculty and staff table hosts, table hosts will be announced, featured discussion starters will speak and pose discussion questions for us to address, uncensored conversations will begin, and evaluations will be passed out.
There is nothing to prepare but hunger and curiosity for honest opinions. This is an opportunity to hear professors’ and fellow students’ uncensored opinions. FREE appetizers and refreshments from the faculty club! Everyone is welcome! Please invite your friends, roommates, family, TAs, professors, etc. Confirmed table hosts (so far) include:
